WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

The City of Prince Albert is now accepting applications for the Permanent position of Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator in the Public Works Department. The wastewater treatment plant operator is responsible for the operation of all Wastewater Treatment Facilities and sewage pumping stations to maintain the operational permit requirements to protect all downstream users and the aquatic life in the North Saskatchewan River.

Required Qualifications:

  • Post-Secondary Diploma in a relevant science or engineering discipline
  • Current Class 2 Certification in Wastewater Treatment
  • A combination education and requisite skills, experience and training may be considered.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Required to monitor and control the operation of the wastewater plant facilities and the sewage pumping stations to meet the objectives of the permit to operate.
  • Perform certain specific tests and record results skillfully and in an organized fashion.
  • Record and maintain instruments and lab equipment.
  • Maintain all computerized records including proper backup of critical information and produce reports.
  • Develop, observe, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures
  • Oversee junior Operators.
  • Responsible for keeping the plant and grounds neat and orderly.
  • Responsible for day-to-day operating procedures associated with the Pre-treatment, Primary Treatment, Secondary Treatment, Sludge Management, Tertiary Treatment processes, disinfection, as well as the operation and maintenance of the Sewage Pumping stations.
  • Operators will assist with preventative maintenance and general equipment maintenance of all associated Wastewater Treatment facilities and sewage pumping stations.
  • Operators will be required to operate various heavy equipment associated with the Wastewater Treatment Facilities.
  • Monitor and maintain the disinfection of equipment, adjust and maintain a defined effluent standard.
  • Receive and assist in unloading chemicals and supplies.
  • Operators are required to do minor maintenance on equipment at the facility.
  • Required to answer public inquiries, conduct tours of the plant and develop and maintain good public relations.
  • Assume responsibilities of the Lead operator and/or Plant Manager in their absence.
  • Follow Acts, Regulations, Permit to Operate, Bylaws, Agreements, policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for encouraging and maintaining high level of safety and communication with all staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation and provide recommendations to the manager.
  • Demonstrated basic mechanical and electrical understanding.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate heavy equipment.
  • Working knowledge of current operating systems, spreadsheet, word processing and database applications as well as other software pertaining to the wastewater treatment facilities.

Special conditions

  • Experience working in a municipal organization is an asset
  • The successful candidate must be willing to participate in all future job-related courses and training programs and certification processes.
  • The Employer will require a mandatory certification process to obtain Class IV Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification.
  • Must complete all other Provincial requirements as deemed necessary from time to time by the Province of Saskatchewan to update and maintain a valid Class IV Wastewater Treatment Certificate
  • Security background and criminal check is required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a minimum class 3A Saskatchewan Drivers license.
  • Will be required to work shift work
  • Will be required to monitor after hours as assigned.
